media essay news values
My
name is Casey Peart and this is my essay about the news values of a news story.
The story I have chosen is the story of the 12 soldiers who died in Niger and
how Donald Trump was disrespectful Mr Johnson’s wife. Mr Johnson is one of the
12 soldiers that died in Niger.
This
has a high threshold as it has Donald trump in the name which is big because he
is the president of the United States which is one of the most powerful
countries in the world. Also the UK have an alliance with the United States meaning
it has a close proximity also. It may not be close to home however we are in
close relation to America. Also as we are in close relation to America stories
from America reach the UK the quickest also news companies such as the BBC
report on Donald Trump a lot which reaches America also.
This
story also links to the Paul Gilroy idea of otherness as the story portrays a
white man slandering a black man and woman and the news jump on the story.
Donald trump supposedly called the mother and wife of Mr Johnson as he was one
of the 12 soldiers to die in Niger and told the widow and his mother that “he
knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway." they both
called this remark disrespectful. This also links to the idea of negativity in
the news as this news is negative and most Donald Trump news in general is
negative. Most news in general is negative because even though news stories
with a happy ending are preferred by people, negative news stories are more eye
catching to viewers as they are more interested to see what has happened that
is negative this also relates to most of the news related to Donald trump being
negative. Most of the time Donald trump in the news is always presented as dumb
and that his ideologies are always dumb. An example of this is when he was in
the news because he wanted to build a wall around Mexico and where he was on
twitter talking about Colin Kaepernick kneeling where again he was presented as
stupid and dumb.
This
story also has a sense of continuity and narrative as the story seems to be
written is stages of a story. There is a protagonist which is Mr Johnson and
the antagonist which is Donald Trump. The story sort of comes together as
Donald Trump makes a disrespectful statement to the widow and mother of a fallen
soldier which is one of many to fall in Niger. However people’s perception of
Trump is that he is racist and that he doesn’t care about the people. This can
link to the Levi Strauss ideology of binary oppositions. Some people of America
oppose trump such as the Colin Kaepernick story of kneeling to the American
Anthem. This is another example of people opposing Trump
In
conclusion this story supports the news values that are mainly negative. It
supports the ideologies of paul Gilroy and levi strauss
